Our priorities

Each year we reflect on the priorities for the DISCO network and the following represents our current priority areas:

The independence project

The common cause that connects all the DISCO members: a campaign to advocate for the unique importance of independent documentary to culture, society and democracy.

Safe and Secure

As safety and security grows ever more complex, DISCO members are committed to supporting one another through hard times and also providing resources and a support network for film workers in each of their regions.

Building capacity

Where funding is limited, the DISCO network strives to strengthen the field through capacity building. At this time DISCO members host over 30 programs for emergent and experienced talents - from story development to edit labs and impact production training as well as publishing free resources.

Future of distribution

Within this priority area, DISCO members are working on a series of interventions - from piloting new models of community distribution to developing educational platforms and convening around future infrastructure for global public interest media.

Impact practice

DISCO members prioritise a justice centered practice and are experienced cultural strategists in using storytelling for positive social and environmental impact. Many of the programmes run by DISCO members support filmmakers and impact producers to develop their impact practice and connect them with civil society allies and campaigners.

Funding for the field

DISCO is advocating for a generational reorganisation and redistribution of funds and curatorial independence to regional cultural organisations. As part of the ongoing work to decolonise and rewild the information ecosystem and redress the dominance of US and European culture.
